Where Tradition Meets Wellness: The Role of Traditional Arabic Islamic Medicine (TAIM) at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som
December 2024 — In an era where wellness trends often chase the latest fads, there's something truly special about turning to ancient practices that have stood the test of time. Traditional Arabic Islamic Medicine (TAIM), with its rich history in the Arab world, offers a holistic approach that nurtures the body, mind, and spirit. At Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som—the first of its kind in the Middle East—this age-old wisdom is brought to life in a luxurious, modern setting. Here, guests can rediscover these timeless healing traditions in a fresh, contemporary way.
The Foundations & Principles of TAIM
TAIM, a holistic wellness system rooted in the Arab world, has been around for centuries and was officially documented in the Canon of Medicine by Ibn Sina (Avicenna) back in 1025. Drawing on Islamic teachings, it emphasises balance in every aspect of life—physical, mental, and spiritual—through mindful practices like diet, movement, digestion, and rest. This approach beautifully weaves together Islamic medicine with regional healing traditions that have evolved over the years.
According to Dr Mubaris Ahamed, TAIM Specialist at Zulal, 'TAIM believes that keeping the body's four humors— blood (dam), phlegm (balgham), yellow bile (safra), and black bile (saudāʾ)—in balance is essential for staying healthy. Humours are considered the essential fluids in the body that influence both physical health and personality.'
In TAIM, temperament, or Mizaj, is key to understanding a person's overall wellbeing. It reflects the natural qualities of both body and mind, shaped by the balance of humours in the body. Each temperament comes with its own set of traits, affecting not just physical health but also mental and emotional states.
TAIM classifies people into four primary temperaments, each linked to the dominance of a specific humour.
Sanguine (Damawi): Dominated by blood; these individuals are seen as warm, optimistic, communicative, and lively, though sometimes disorganised.
Phlegmatic (Bulgami): Abundance of phlegm; these people are calm, thoughtful, often introverted, and imaginative.
Choleric (Safrawi): Driven by yellow bile; they are passionate, self-confident, and assertive.
Melancholic (Soudawi): Influenced by black bile; they are reflective, analytical, organised, and occasionally reserved.
Dr Bibi Ayesha Lockhat, another TAIM Specialist at the resort, explains, 'When these humours are out of balance, it can lead to various health issues. At Zulal, our focus is on understanding each person's unique mix of these humours. By assessing an individual's dominant humour and overall temperament, we can create personalised treatments that address specific health concerns and promote overall wellbeing. This personalised care is the core of what we offer at Zulal.'
TAIM at Zulal Wellness Resort
Zulal is leading the way in modern TAIM practice by offering a unique retreat experience. Guests start with a consultation with a Health and Wellness Advisor, and optionally, a TAIM specialist. This helps identify treatments and activities to each guest's needs, with options like dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and various therapies.
The resort provides a range of treatments designed to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. A standout feature is its themed gardens—like the Garden of Contemplation, Essence, Well Being, and Nourishment—filled with TAIM-inspired herbs such as olive, fig, rose, aloe vera, camel grass, and lemon grass. Guests are guided through these gardens, learning about the significance of each.
Zulal uses over 250 medicinal herbs, many of which are native to the region, in its TAIM practices. Treatments like Hijama (cupping therapy) and specialised massages such as Massage Al Batin (abdominal massage) and Massage Al-Ra's (head massage) help detoxify, relieve tension, and restore natural energy flow. These therapies offer a rejuvenating experience deeply connected to the region's cultural heritage.
Zulal's commitment to TAIM is also apparent in its spiritual and dietary offerings. Spiritual therapies, like prayer and dhikr chanting, help guests reconnect with themselves, their families, and nature, guided by visiting practitioners and spiritual counselors.
Guests can also enjoy a delightful selection of over 100 tea blends, all rooted in the wisdom of TAIM. These teas are crafted with traditional herbs like black seed, mint, and chamomile, known for their natural healing benefits. Each blend is designed to support your health, and the tea master explains the use and benefits of each tea.
The resort's cuisine is an essential part of the wellness experience. Meals at Zulal are prepared according to TAIM principles, designed to improve digestion and overall health. The menu blends Middle Eastern and international flavours, using TAIM-inspired superfoods like olive oil, figs, camel milk, sumac, honey, and dates to nourish both body and mind. These nutrient-dense foods are used in the resort's dishes, along with traditional herbs and other TAIM staples like saffron and carob seeds.
Guests are also encouraged to follow a diet as individualised as their wellness programs, with guidance from nutritionists to ensure their choices align with TAIM principles. Emphasising local, organic ingredients and traditional cooking methods, this approach supports physical health while honouring the cultural roots of TAIM.
Beyond the treatments and therapies, Zulal encourages guests to incorporate TAIM into their daily lives. The resort's House of Wisdom provides a space for mindfulness and learning, offering books on local culture and healing practices. Guests can also participate in workshops on wellness cooking, tea infusion, and essential oils to equip them with knowledge to continue their wellness journey long after leaving the resort.
Zulal's peaceful location enhances the TAIM experience. Located in the quiet northern area of Al Ruwais, Qatar, the resort offers a serene environment perfect for relaxation and reflection. With its natural seclusion, luxurious amenities, and thoughtful design, guests can unwind and immerse themselves in TAIM's restorative practices, leaving everyday stresses behind.
Celebrating Ibn Sina: The Inaugural TAIM Month
In August 2024, Zulal hosted its first TAIM Month, honouring Ibn Sina, the father of modern medicine. The event included workshops, wellness talks, and personalised consultations focusing on Ibn Sina's contributions to medicine and their ongoing influence on TAIM practices today.
During this event, visitors had the opportunity to learn about the historical significance of TAIM and how its principles are applied in modern wellness practices. The month-long celebration also featured demonstrations of traditional healing techniques to give guests a hands-on understanding of TAIM's practical applications.
Heritage, Luxury & Sustainability
What sets Zulal apart is its unique fusion of TAIM's ancient wisdom with the luxury and comfort you'd expect from a world-class retreat. This mix of natural beauty, cultural richness, and advanced wellness practices has positioned Zulal as a leader in the global wellness industry.
Additionally, the resort's commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its operations, including practices such as the use of solar energy, organic gardening, waste recycling, and mangrove planting. These efforts reflect Zulal's philosophy of respecting and preserving the environment, in harmony with TAIM's holistic principles that emphasise balance between individuals and the natural world. This approach fits perfectly with Msheireb Properties' vision of creating spaces that prioritise people's wellbeing by blending tradition with modernity—a key reason why Zulal Wellness Resort is a proud part of their portfolio.
