Doha – January 30, 2023: More than 500 graduates of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) are currently serving successful careers as physicians, scientists, and academics at leading institutions in Qatar and internationally. Amongst them is Dr. Mustafa Kinaan, who was recently appointed program director of the University of Central Florida/HCA Healthcare GME Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship.

As part of his new role, Dr. Kinaan is responsible for overseeing the fellowship program, curriculum, and training future endocrinologists. He is also tasked with ensuring the program meets the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) criteria and assessing trainee competencies and readiness for independent practice, amongst other responsibilities.

After receiving his medical degree from WCM-Q in 2014, Dr. Kinaan joined the inaugural internal medicine residency class at the University of Central Florida/HCA Healthcare GME. He then served as a chief medical resident at the Orlando VA Medical Center, after which he continued his medical training with the University of Central Florida/HCA Healthcare GME as both an endocrinology fellow and chief fellow. During his training, Dr. Kinaan received several awards, including the Resident Humanitarian Award, the Fellow Clinical Skills Award, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) Young Investigator Award.

Following his graduation from the fellowship program, Dr. Kinaan joined the University of Central Florida/HCA Healthcare GME as an assistant professor of medicine and a core faculty member at the endocrine fellowship and internal medicine residency programs. He was later promoted to assistant program director of scholarly activity with the internal medicine residency and associate program director of the endocrinology fellowship prior to his most recent appointment as program director of the endocrinology fellowship. As a faculty member, Dr. Kinaan received the Osler Award and GME Teaching & Mentorship Award in appreciation of his skills.

Dr. Kinaan said: “I fell in love with endocrinology during my early medical student days at WCM-Q because it combined my passions for basic science and patient care. I was fortunate to work with Dr. Christopher Triggle at WCM-Q during the Student Summer Research Program (SSRP). My work with Dr. Triggle on the cellular mechanisms of hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction sparked my first interest in endocrinology. WCM-Q provided me with all the tools and experiences necessary to achieve my career goals, and for that, I am eternally grateful. With my current new appointment, I feel that I have reached a full circle moment in my career, where I not only help patients suffering from complex endocrine and metabolic disorders but simultaneously train the next generation of endocrinologists.”

Dr. Thurayya Arayssi, vice dean for academic and curricular affairs, said: “At WCM-Q, we offer a world-class medical education that equips our graduates with the best knowledge, support, skills, and tools necessary to become great doctors, scientists, and academics. However, it remains up to our highly talented alumni to take the leap and translate their qualifications into a successful and personally fulfilling career in medicine. We are extremely proud of what Dr. Kinaan has achieved over such a short period of time.”

Dr. Kinaan is an active member of the Endocrine Society, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Thyroid Association, Pituitary Society, and other professional organizations. He has a special interest in medical education and is proactive about teaching learners of different levels and curriculum development. Dr. Kinaan is also engaged in research and quality improvement projects that focus on diabetes and glucometrics.

WCM-Q offers an integrated Six-Year Medical Program that leads to the highly reputable Ivy League Cornell University M.D. degree. The institution is at the forefront of medical education, biomedical research, and population health in the Middle East and internationally.
