Doha, Qatar, January 20, 2019:  As part of its year-long celebration of the 10th anniversary of Northwestern University in Qatar’s establishment in Doha, it is joining with its alumni and hosting a homecoming for the University’s faculty, staff, and students.

Homecomings are a tradition in the United States for universities to welcome back former students, along with current students, faculty, and staff, to celebrate the institution. The Northwestern Club of Qatar will host the event, which is being held as part of Northwestern’s global alumni event – NU Connects.

“We look forward to welcoming home our alumni as part of NU Connects, as well as hosting our current students, faculty, and staff for a homecoming that will mark and celebrate NU-Q’s development and achievements in Doha over the past 10-years. It is fitting that our alumni have organized this event as it gives all a chance to celebrate them collectively—and as individuals,” said Everette E. Dennis, dean and CEO.

“Our greatest achievement is our alumni—nearly 300 of them to date—who rightly make us proud by dint of their individual accomplishments and the role they are playing in Qatari society and elsewhere across the globe,” Dennis said.

He added, “Since 2008, we have equipped our students with the knowledge and skills needed in today’s ever evolving digital world. And, as a result, our alumni are working successfully as journalists, strategic communicators, in government and the private sector – as well as attending the finest graduate schools in the world to study business, law, and communication.”

NU Connects is a program sponsored by the Northwestern Alumni Association that gives alumni the opportunity to expand their Northwestern network locally as well as globally through a series of specially-coordinated events held on the same night in cities around the world. Northwestern’s global alumni are encouraged to join a NU Connects event in their country or region.

NU-Q is celebrating its 10th year anniversary through a series of events over the course of the year, culminating with an iftar for graduating seniors and family members, along with faculty, staff, students, and alumni on May 6th at the Four Seasons. 

“NU-Q has a unique presence in Doha as Northwestern’s only international campus, a one-of-a-kind enterprise with great ambition that aims to be first in class,” Dennis said. “It has successfully attracted Qataris, just over 50 percent of the student body, along with top students from some 40 countries. These students and alumni have helped Northwestern develop an acceptance of the study of and careers in communication, media, and journalism. Students and parents have come to appreciate and advocate for these disciplines—and for media freedom as an essential element in a modern society.”

The homecoming event is scheduled for January 23rd at 6:00 p.m. and will feature an American-style cook-out in the NU-Q Courtyard and Forum, which will provide an opportunity for the entire NU-Q community to connect and re-connect.  Members of the community wishing to attend can register here: NU Connects.
